Confederate States

1862-1863 Confederate States
During the Civil War, the 11 southern states that seceded from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America used distinctive stamps depicting their own president, Jefferson Davis, George Washington and other statesmen. The 5¢ blue portrait of Davis on thin glazed paper, printed in London, is the only American stamp ever manufactured outside the American continent. There were two dies made of the 10¢ blue Davis, differing in shading of the corner ornaments. These historical stamps complement any US stamp collection.
