Having previously served as a professor and superintendent at the United States Military Academy, Alden Partridge went on to establish what would become Norwich University. Seeing the weakness of the militias during the War of 1812, Partridge advocated the concept of the "citizen soldier" and trained officers at Norwich as both engineers and farmers.
