Rear Admiral Richard Byrd was a pioneering American polar explorer, aviator, and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. In 1928 Byrd led a landmark expedition into the Antarctic that involved two ships and three airplanes. After constructing a base camp and completing certain scientific missions, Byrd launched his famous flight over the South Pole on November 29, 1929.
