Completed in 1800, John Adams was the first President to take residence in the White House. Designed by Irish architect James Hoban, it was built at a cost of $400,000. Nearly destroyed by fire in 1814, it has been expanded and renovated many times, and its interior was gutted and completely rebuilt during Truman's administration.
