Though it operated for only nine years, the pictured X-15 rocket plane still holds the world record for highest speed ever recorded by a manned, powered aircraft, set by William J. Knight at a speed of Mach 6.72 (4,520 miles per hour) in October 1967. During the program, 8 pilots flew the legendary aircraft at an altitude of over 50 miles, which at the time was considered to be the limit of space. Breaking this milestone qualified each pilot as an astronaut. Despite this legacy, only three of these experimental planes were ever built. Scott 4018 X-Plane
