#5284 - (50¢) Flag Act of 1818

The U.S. Congress passed the Flag Act of 1818 to set the rule that the flag should only have 13 alternating horizontal red and white stripes to represent the original colonies, and the number of stars was to match the current number of states in the union. Before this rule there had been flags with 15 stripes as well as stars when new states were added to the union in 1794. The act is still in effect today. Scott 5284 Flag Act of 1818
