The first President to assume office through succession and the youngest President until that date, John Tyler took office following the death of William Henry Harrison. Tyler oversaw the annexation of the Republic of Texas in 1845. Less well known, John Tyler was elected to public office for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Scott 815 John Tyler
