# 885 - 2¢ James A. McNeill Whistler - Artist
James Abbott McNeill Whistler's fame arose from a series of youthful failures; he was expelled from West Point and, while working for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, was disciplined for doodling sea-serpents and mermaids into the margins of his maps. After expatriating to France, Whistler gained the approval of many prominent citizens, but was controversial in the art world. His most famous work, known as "Whistler's Mother", was grudgingly accepted at the Royal Academy, but now hangs prominently in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Scott 885 James A. McNeill Whistler
