On July 21, 1940, the Soviet Union invaded and annexed Lithuania, ending its brief post-World War I independence. These overprints, proclaiming the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, would be the final Lithuanian stamps until it re-emerged as an independent republic in 1990.  Lithuania #2N9-16
