Legends of the West Error - Save $15 on this scarce 1994 sheet - quantities are limited
It should have been a celebration of the West's most captivating characters, yet became one of the great errors in U.S. stamp history. Instead of legendary Bill Pickett, the first African-American cowboy inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame, red-faced postal officials portrayed his younger brother Ben. The sheets were hastily recalled but 183 had already been sold before the scheduled official first day of issue in April - a few later sold at auction for $15,000!
To diffuse the uproar, a lottery sale of 150,000 sheets was announced for single orders postmarked on October 1, 1994. The small quantity sold quickly and high collector demand have made these sheets issued over 30 years ago an incredible modern rarity. Quantities are limited. (US #2870)
