In 1868, Jose Maceo began his career with the Cuban army at the age of 19, rising to the rank of Colonel during the Ten Years' War between Cuba and Spain. During the Cuban War for Independence and the Spanish-American War, Maceo was promoted to the rank of Major General and died during combat in 1896 after leading his troops to numerous victories. This set commemorated the 100th anniversary of his birth. Maceo is still honored today as a hero who led Cuba to independence. (Cuba #471-72)
