Marsh Is.#306 Doolittle Raid on Tokyo - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue

April 18, 1942 Eighteen weeks after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, a highly courageous mission led by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle brought the war to Japanese soil. Sixteen B-25 bombers launched from the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet struck Tokyo, damaging steel factories, oil refineries and military bases. On the morning of the attack, the fleet was spotted by Japanese patrol boats 150 miles from the launch point. Even with the element of surprise eliminated, the Japanese expected a Pearl Harbor-type raid — rather than a bomber attack — since planes of this size had never been launched from an aircraft carrier. All 16 bombers cleared Japanese air space and 70 out of the 82 crew members made it safely home. Aside from physical damage, the Doolittle Raid had a tremendous psychological effect. It showed the Japanese that they were not safe from the threat of Allied attack.
