A man of true conviction and high-minded ideals, Carl Schurz fought for his beliefs with both the pen and the sword. German-born, Schurz graduated from the University of Bonn and became involved in the German revolutionary movement of 1848-49. Forced to flee following a failed insurrection, Schurz eventually arrived in Wisconsin and was admitted to that state's Bar. A fierce abolitionist, Schurz was a Lincoln supporter, was commissioned a brigadier general, and fought in several major battles of the Civil War. Later a journalist, Schurz is famous for saying, "Our country -- when right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right." Scott 1847 Carl Schurz
