Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was a sailor, explorer and businessman who is best know for his exploration of California's coast in 1542 on behalf of the Spanish king and queen. Credited with discovering San Diego Bay and Catalina Island, Cabrillo was injured during a skirmish with the indigenous Chumash people and later succumbed to his wounds.
