#4545 - (44¢) Mark Twain

Author of such works as “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court,” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” Mark Twain (1835-1910) has been referred to as “the father of American literature” and “the greatest humorist this country has ever produced.” Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, his pen name of Mark Twain was taken from his experiences growing up on the Mississippi River. The term to mark twain meant the water had been measured and was a safe depth for riverboat travel. He is known for being a man of strong, outspoken political and social views that were considered radical for the time. Scott 4545 Mark Twain
